Luftgekült: The Cult of the Air-Cooled Porsche

title photo 2 While most of the country froze under an unrelenting winter, a seemingly endless line of vintage Porsches wound through a Culver City art district for what has quickly become one of the best celebrations of all things air-cooled.  Gray skies hung over Luftgekült 2 but even the threatened rain didn’t dare show itself in the company of such a supreme assembly of German machinery. luftgekult-air-cooled-porsche-meet-coverage-DL_POR005 Organized by Howie Idelson and Porsche factory driver Patrick Long, Luftgekült, in only it’s second year, has already become the go-to event for the Porsche faithful. The purity of Porsche’s air-cooled origins is undeniable and the demand for these cars is skyrocketing. luftgekult-air-cooled-porsche-meet-coverage-DL_POR017 Bandito Brothers opened their expansive compound and skylight-lit production space to anyone interested in paying homage to some of the best creations ever to rumble out of the Zuffenhausen factory. Inside were the jewels of the gathering, a rare 904, a 906, one of the evil black Interscope 935’s, a special lightweight factory 911, and standing guard at one of the large sliding doors- a ferocious Kremer 935K3, perhaps the ultimate development in the 911 lineage. luftgekult-air-cooled-porsche-meet-coverage-DL_POR036 The Baja-inspired environment pays tribute to Bandito Brothers head honcho, Mouse McCoy, whose one-man exploits in the Baja 1000 were captured in the film Dust To Glory. Now a media empire, McCoy’s Bandito Brothers stay close to their motor racing roots. The big crowd was a mixture of hipster, Hollywood, gearheads and girlfriends, all pointing fingers and cameras at any fender curve, be it weathered from use or polished with care. There was a lot of German being spoken in hushed, and reverential tones. luftgekult-air-cooled-porsche-meet-coverage-DL_POR010 As the last of the cars blasted off and the first raindrops hit, there was already a feeling of anticipation for the next Luftgekühlt and their unofficial motto- Under Promise Over deliver And keep it air-cooled!
