General Motors Announces Next Addition to Their EV Lineup: The Chevy Silverado EV

The EV market is the way of the future according to some of the industry's top automotive brands. This includes General Motors, with their impressive new Hummer EV Edition 1 set to hit the market in 2022. So it should come as no surprise that yet another EV pickup truck model has been announced by the automotive giant, especially since crosstown rival Ford already announced their upcoming all-electric F-150 pickup.

"Silverado"

Just this week, GM announced plans for an all-electric Silverado pickup truck to join the future ranks of the brand. The truck, which was announced by GM President, Mark Reuss on April 6th, is set to be produced at the company's Factory ZERO—the now renamed Detroit-Hamtramck facility that is currently being renovated to start producing the upcoming Hummer EV lineup.

While not much has been revealed about the new truck just yet (including what it will look like), GM released a press release along side the announcement promising that the new Silverado is “designed from the ground up to be an EV,” and will use the best of the Ultium Platform while maintaining the truck's “proven capability.” They also boast that the new Silverado EV can be expected to get up to 400 miles of range on a full charge. Retail and fleet versions of the truck are said to become available, while GM says the EVs will retain many of the optional upgrades and levels customers have become accustomed to when buying a new Chevy pickup.

There's no word yet on when we can expect the new Silverado EV to hit the market, but with the new Hummer EV set to enter production later this year, and the Hummer EV SUV set to hit dealerships in 2024, we can only speculate that GM will be pushing to get the new Chevy EV truck offering to the market in the next couple of years.

EV Truck Competitive Landscape

Many other companies besides GM are entering the EV truck market. We've all read about Tesla's radical new Cybertruck, while Rivian proved the prowess of their RT1 in the off-road world by becoming the first EV to compete in the all-women run Rebelle Rally in 2020. Other niche companies like Atlas and Nikola have their models to be considered, while even Ford has a foot in the game.

So what does this mean for the Silverado EV? Or more importantly, what does it mean for the automotive market? Well, the idea of EV being the way of the future might just be closer to reality that some had originally considered. In fact, if GM has it their way, they'll have delivered over a million electric vehicles to the global market by 2025, getting closer and closer to their “zero crashes, zero emissions, and zero congestion” vision of the future.

The Silverado EV pickup will certainly be a part of that. And with GM promising more details on the truck to come in the near future, we'll be sure to keep you informed on just what we can expect from the future EV pickup.
