5 Reasons Why the 2023 Toyota Sequoia Could be the Best, New Overlanding Vehicle Available

After nearly 15 years of the same full-sized offerings, Toyota finally updated their full-sized line up.

We finally got an all-new Tundra and Lexus LX. Bad news for the US is that we lost the Land Cruiser.

What we gain is the most capable Sequoia ever and possibly the best new overland vehicle on the market. The new model is packed with more power, capability and luxury than ever.

Here are 5 reasons why the 2023 is the best new overland vehicle on the market and a worthy successor to the Land Cruiser.

More of Everything with Less Cylinders

Like the Tundra, the Sequoia loses the big V8. This time around, the only engine available will be a V6 twin-turbo hybrid making 437hp and 583 lb-ft of torque.

Although MPG numbers have not yet been announced, it is likely to pull MPG numbers in the 20s. It will also allow the Sequoia to tow up to 9,000. With stats like that, who would miss the V8?

Built-in Sleeping Platform

Some SUVs create a flat floor when the seats are folded down. But that leaves no room for cargo.

The Sequoia’s Adjustable Cargo Shelf System allows you to have a flat sleeping platform while leaving space behind the third row for cargo.

Ready for Adventure

In addition to a two-speed transfer case and suite of off-road features, the TRD Pro comes equipped with Fox internal bypass shocks.

The exterior gets a number of upgrades as well: underneath, there are ¼-inch thick aluminum skid plates, on top is a roof rack, and the grill houses an LED light bar and fog lights.

Solid Rear Axle + Rear Locking Differential

While most of the current generation SUVs like the Tahoe/Suburban and Expedition have transitioned to car-like independent rear coil spring suspensions, the Sequoia actually goes against evolution by getting a solid axle rear suspension.

A rear locking differential is available when equipped with optional part-time 4WD. Mount a set of capable all-terrain tires like Nitto Recon Grappler and the Sequoia would be unstoppable.

Big Luxury

Aimed at the Wagoneer, Yukon Denali and the like, the Sequoia Capstone trim turns up the luxury dial to 11.

With plush semi-aniline leather seats trimmed with black and white perforations, open pore American walnut trim and acoustic glass and more sound deadening for a quieter ride, there's no mistaking this interior for a 4Runner's.

With more off-road focused options on the market than ever, Toyota has certainly upped the ante in the most capable overland vehicle game.
